Polina Chaplygina was operated
On the 4th of September here, on this website, we told the story of 2-years-old Polina Chaplygina from Moscow. Polina suffers from a complex genitourinary malformation. Surgery at the Portland Hospital (London) will save her. The clinic presented the family with a bill in the amount of £91,863.00. Chaplygina’s family doesn’t have this much money. We are happy to announce that required amount has been successfully raised – Rusfond (rusfond.ru) has helped. £15,936.00 has been raised by Rusfond UK donors. The girl was operated. Polina’s relatives are very grateful to everybody who has helped them. Please, accept our gratitude, dear friends!
The treatment at the Portland Hospital will save Polina Chaplygina
Polina was born with a severe pathology. The doctors at the hospital could not even determine the sex of the newborn child: all the organs were seriously deformed. The bladder was outside and looked like a ball on the abdomen; pelvic bones were separated by four centimeters. Later on the doctors as well diagnosed the dislocation of the hip joint. For more than a year my daughter was in a cast, and now she's wearing a splint. On the third day of her life Polina underwent surgery: the bladder was returned to its place, the abdominal wall was sewn with a hole left in it for urination. Now the next stage of treatment is needed, the Kelly procedure, which is a complete reconstruction of the genitourinary system; after that my daughter will be able to control her urination. This surgery is carried out only in a few countries abroad. At home we are offered the less radical correction of pathology that requires several stages. This means that we will have to wait a few years until the bladder will grow. But the earlier Polina will be operated, the more likely she will fully recover and will become a socially adapted person. For treatment, we are invited to the Portland Hospital, but I am not able to pay for it, bringing up three children by myself with very little alimony. You are my only hope! Svetlana Chaplygina, Moscow.
Imran Mushtaq, Consultant Paediatric Urologist at the Portland Hospital (London): “I am sure that the Kelly procedure will help Polina. This is a complex and effective surgery, as a result of which it is possible to achieve continence. The girl will eventually be able to get along without nappies”.
